James Street in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley is fast becoming a dining and hospitality hotspot. With the addition of SUNSHINE Eatery, there is truly something for everyone.
The concept is simple. Mediterranean vegetarian food that is filling and tasty, served in a counter style format and charged by plate weight. SUNSHINE is a fast turnaround eatery for dine in or takeaway. The venue offers seating which is exclusively outdoors. An array of tables and booths line the street frontage of SUNSHINE. Patrons are welcome to pick a table and enjoy their meal while watching the hustle and bustle of the James Street strip.
Where Soho Sound Design fits in
Soho Sound Design was commissioned to design and install a state of the art sound, lighting and control solution that would suit the venue and it’s intricacies.
The major challenge was the outdoor seating area where only permanent umbrella poles offered suitable mounting locations for lighting and audio. Each of the six umbrellas are permanently fixed to the ground and rated to withstand cyclonic weather. Each has two lights and an MM-4XP speaker permanently fixed at the top on a teak wood collar. This allows for effective and intimate reach of lighting and audio to the tables, without the umbrella fabric obstructing coverage, which is typically a problem in this type of setting. In addition to the umbrellas, there is a planter to one side which hosts a pair of MM-4XP speakers on poles servicing three seating booths. These two speakers feature customised top covers to reduce public tampering and provide mechanical protection for the cable and EN3 connector. Bass is handled by three MM-10XP subwoofers, two located under the outer booths and one in the waiter station at the other end of the space. To avoid theft, every outdoor speaker has been fitted with bolts that require a specialised security bit to undo.
The inside of the venue is serviced by five MM-4XPs spread around a lighting track. Bass is handled by a single MM-10XP subwoofer located under a central merchandise table.
The staff use bespoke RTI control screens to manage the DALI enabled lighting, audio and three EPSON digital signage projectors for menu boards. While most daily functions are automated, the staff have total control and can manually set the venue for special events and functions.
The final result is a customised and appropriate audio and control solution that delivers exceptional performance and reliability in a challenging and unique environment.
